Welcome to Publications International, Ltd. and to the Department of General Acquisitions!  In a nutshell, the role of our department is to acquire all necessary manuscript and art for books in the General Division of PIL, which includes Inspirational/Religious books, Gift-sets, Lifestyle (History, Aviation, Interior Design, etc.), Consumer, Children’s Educational, Crafts, Health/Medical, and Sports.  At times, we also work to support other divisions like Children’s, Cookbooks, and New Seasons (stationery) to help them to complete their projects. Sometimes our role is very minor, especially if it is an update or just a reformatted book.  Other times, our role is very intensive, involving a large amount of research.   Since each project is its own entity, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what you should expect over its duration.  Use this manual as a guide, but always double check procedures with the department head, manager, or other more seasoned acquisitions editors at least for the first four to six months while you are training.

Overall, you serve as the liaison between PIL and the vendors and contributors of the projects.  You will be responsible for researching and hiring contributors, locating images, negotiating all fees, projecting and following budgets, contracting all contributors, working with other departments, maintaining relationships, due dates, and overall project continuity.

This can be a tall order but I assure you the experiences you gather here will follow you throughout your professional life.
